As a 73 year old it is depressing that almost nothing works as well as it used to. unless efficiency is improved and the work ethic restored , I honestly don't think it is possible for hour country to recover.

Useful interview with a lot of good economic sense. Towards the end Stride pointed out weak labour leadership plus hard left back benchers are preventing Reeves from making necessary cuts. Kemi may be a strong leader but in government she would still face resistance from one nation / lib dem Tories, whether on ECHR, net zero, Europe. The Conservatives were stuck, failing to deliver in the previous decade. Labour, like the Tories are not united in purpose and policies. They both failed to deliver. Boris got Brexit done thanks to Nigel Farage standing his party down. Thereafter Tories were not operating in unison.
The biggest problem any potential next government faces in campaigning is that the benefits class is now such a huge cohort (including the massive Motability gravy train) that any party that proposes to tackle welfare immediately loses millions of potential voters, even if there are clear plans for immigration and identity politics - which a lot of even the work-shy would be receptive to. Mel Stride clearly knows his stuff though, and knows how the real world works. Very impressive prospect as a "potential" Chancellor. The Conservatives have got a whole lot of work to do though to bring back their former voters after all those years of soft socialism.
Get rid of all the Green crap. About 30 years worth of Green regulations and bureaucray needs to be cut out of the system.
You talk about the savings in emissions by producing gas from the North Sea. This is madness. Why bother with it when China is using coal to manufacture EV to export to us. Very few countries are bothering with the climate change and its anti-CO2 dogma. So why are we doing any of it.
He defended the poor debt position left by the conservatives saying they had to keep the economy going during COVID. He was let off having to acknowledge the conservatives locked down the country causing the need to intervene (throw money at the economy)
Great discussion; Mel Stride seems decent enough but he lost me completely saying the Tories had handled COVID well. Objectively untrue and the Ukraine war was their last two years in office. What happened to the previous 12 years? Far more respect would be had if he'd said "yep, we stuffed up a lot of things and Labour has taken a flame thrower to what remained". On that the British public would largely agree.
Mel Stride didn't come across as well in this interview. Answers were quite formulaic and he was more reticent to disassociate the Tories with their recent record in office.
THE problem and failure of ALL 'Right Wing' parties is that INCREDIBLE information such as here, needs to find a platform/media where 'ordinary' busy people can get the message. Sadly, very very few people will ever sit down and watch 39 minutes of conversation between you two very interesting men. Your audience is microscopic. You MUST find a better way or Starmer's Communists will carry on screwing Britain until it breaks, which is very close.
